There is something about a wood burning stove that no other form of heating quite replicates. The warmth is immediate, the ambience is unmatched, and when you choose the right stove for your space it becomes one of the most used and most loved features in a home. At Essex Log Burners we stock a carefully curated range of wood burning stoves and multifuel stoves from some of the most trusted manufacturers in the UK, all available to buy online with mainland delivery.
Whether you are buying for a new build, retrofitting into an existing fireplace, or sourcing stoves for a trade installation project, our range covers the full spectrum of outputs, styles and price points to suit every requirement and we ship across the whole of the UK mainland.
Traditional or Modern - Which Stove is Right for You?
Choosing a wood burning stove comes down to more than just output. The aesthetic needs to work with the room it lives in, and the fuel type needs to suit how you plan to use it day to day. We have split our range into two distinct collections to make that decision easier.
Our traditional stoves are built with classic proportions and timeless detailing. Cast iron construction, clean lines, and that familiar silhouette that has warmed British homes for generations. These stoves sit beautifully in period properties, exposed brick alcoves and cottage interiors, but equally hold their own in more contemporary rooms where the warmth of a traditional design is entirely intentional.
Our modern stoves take a very different approach, with sleek profiles, large glass viewing areas and a minimal aesthetic that integrates naturally into open plan living spaces and new build homes. If clean edges and a contemporary look are what you are after, this is where to start.
What to Consider When Buying a Wood Burning Stove
It is a question we get asked regularly: how do I choose the right wood burning stove? There are a few key things worth working through before you settle on a model.
Output in kW is the most important starting point. As a general rule, you need roughly 1kW of output per 14 cubic metres of space. A 5kW wood burning stove suits most standard living rooms, while larger open plan spaces may require 8kW or above. Getting this right matters, an underpowered stove will struggle, and an overpowered one will run too hot to control efficiently.
Fuel type is the next consideration. A wood burning stove burns seasoned logs only, while a multifuel stove gives you the flexibility to also burn solid fuels such as smokeless coal or anthracite. If you want one appliance that can adapt to whatever is available, a multifuel stove is usually the more practical choice for most households.
ECOdesign compliance is now a legal requirement for all new stoves sold in the UK. Every stove in our range meets current ECOdesign 2022 standards, meaning lower particulate emissions and better fuel efficiency as standard. When you buy from us you can be confident your stove is compliant.
There are a few other things worth bearing in mind before purchasing:
- Flue position, whether top or rear exit, will affect which stoves suit your installation and chimney setup
- Inset stoves sit within the fireplace opening rather than standing proud, which suits rooms where space or projection is limited
- Freestanding stoves offer greater flexibility in positioning and are often the preferred choice for larger hearth spaces
- Boiler stoves allow you to connect to your hot water or central heating system, increasing the efficiency and value of the appliance across the whole house

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I still buy a wood burning stove in the UK? Yes. Wood burning stoves and multifuel stoves are still available to buy in the UK. From 2022 onwards all new stoves must meet ECOdesign 2022 standards, which every stove in our range does. There is no ban on buying or using a wood burning stove.
What is the difference between a wood burning stove and a multifuel stove? A wood burning stove is designed exclusively for burning seasoned or kiln dried logs. A multifuel stove can burn logs as well as approved solid fuels such as smokeless coal. If you want flexibility in what you burn, a multifuel stove is the better option.
What size wood burning stove do I need? A rough guide is 1kW per 14 cubic metres of room volume. For a typical lounge of around 70 cubic metres, a 5kW stove is usually the right starting point. For larger or open plan spaces, 8kW upwards is more appropriate. Our team is always happy to help you calculate the right output for your specific room.
